Foreign Affairs Fellowship provides opportunity for unique scholarship

Staff Writer

Recently students around campus have been receiving postings about scholarship opportunities in their Alma email accounts.

The Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship is given by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation to attract and fund students with possible interest in pursuit of careers in the U.S. State Department, specifically in the area of Foreign Service.

This Foreign Affairs Fellowship is courtesy of the new Director of International Education Tatyana Puchkova, "I envision the International Office as a clearinghouse for information for students and faculty."

The fellowship provides funding including tuition, room, and board during sophomore and junior undergraduate years and the first year of graduate study.

Program components are as follows: one summer institute with a seven week curriculum including economics, calculus and policy analysis; two summer internships; mentoring from a foreign service officer; must meet the Department of State Foreign Service entry requirements; and by graduation must have completed specific courses in a wide range of study from Economics and English to Political Science and History.

Although the International Office does not administer the scholarships, they plan to continue researching information as a service to Alma College.

Applicants should have at least a 3.2 grade point average and applications are due February 20, 2004. To receive an application, contact x. 7055.
