35. That’s a lot of consecutive losses. It entails seasons of frustration for the men’s basketball team. Everyone knows the streak has to end at some time. This week could be that time.
It may be difficult to imagine but I can identify with the team. At one point in my illustrious athletic career I endured a 23-game losing skid in pool to my best friend. It’s frustrating when you just can’t seem to win. My salvation: pure luck. Eventually my friend played horribly and I was able to take advantage and end my misery. This may be the shot the Scots are looking for. Sooner or later an opponent is bound to have an off game and the team will take advantage.
This week the Scots will host Tri-State and Olivet. Tri-State is an opponent that will move to the MIAA after this season. They play at a furious pace, aver-aging 15 three-pointers and nearly 100 points per game. The Scots defense will definitely be tested while their offense should be free to put up huge numbers. At the very least it should be a very quick, exciting game. Olivet also presents an opportunity for a win. The Comets are 3-4 in the MIAA and 9-10 overall.
The women’s basketball team en-dured two tough losses last week but is looking forward to getting back in the swing of things this week. Tri-State and Olivet make for an easier week than last weeks opponents (Calvin and Albion). They will be looking to move up in the conference standings to im-prove their chances in the league tournament.
Although there is a still a light dusting of snow on the ground the men’s tennis team is hard at work. They begin their competition this weekend, traveling to the north country to face Michigan Tech, Lake Superior State and Minnesota State-Mankato. The team has four returning seniors and will look to move up from its fifth-place finish in the conference last season. The Scots will be facing a tough challenge in this task as perennial powers Hope and Kalamazoo will be standing in the way. Hopefully the team can start the season off on the right foot this weekend.
