Exciting Super Bowl keeps Alma students entertained

Sunday’s Super Bowl viewers were in for surprises. Whether it was the New England Patriots’ deciding field goal in the final seconds of the game or the Janet Jackson fiasco, an interesting time was had by all. When it got down to the wire, the Panthers and the Patriots were neck and neck, with a score of 29-29. Then with nine seconds remaining, Adam Vinatieri of the Patriots made a 41-yard field goal. The final score was 32-29.
“It was good play [in the first half] because they jumped on each other,” Jared Stevens (07) said.
Calvin Hilson (06) said that “it was like two different games in one.” The first half was defensive, he said, and the second half was offensive.
The referees’ final calls on plays left something to be desired for some viewers. “The officiating was pretty bad,” Tim Slade (04) said.
Aside from the half-time show’s usual commercials, there were also musical performances. Justin Timberlake ripped off a part of Janet Jackson’s costume, exposing one of her breasts in the process.
“I thought the Janet Jackson incident was pretty absurd,” Slade said.
Tyler Briggs (07) wasn’t surprised by what happened. “I thought it was typical that they wanted to get a rise out of people,” he said.
Briggs cheered for the Panthers because everyone else he was with rooted for the Patriots. “I feel there is something noble about supporting the underdog,” he said.
Some viewers, like Joan “Stu” Stewart (05) did get their wish when the Patriots won. “My team won, and that’s all that matters,” she said.
