Emotional response inhibits rational consideration of controversial topics

Over the past couple of weeks, various opinions have been circulating regarding the recent opinion piece written by Mr. Hopkins. As a result of listening to some of those opinions, I must reveal that I was shocked and dismayed at some of the reactions that played out before me. I observed generally nice individuals calling for Mr. Hopkins’ head under the guillotine as soon as possible. Granted the rhetoric used by the students was occasionally more or less colorful, the message was still basically the same as far as I was concerned.

Christian outraged by Editorial

I, as a Christian, am outraged at the recent article insulting the chapel and its services. I hardly know where to begin.

Hopkins "exiled women" and "expelled homosexuals"

I would like to make a few comments regarding the aforementioned article by Mr. Thad Hopkins. I understand that this article was printed in the “Opinion” section of the Almanian and I understand that this article was just that, opinion. I am not writing this letter to in anyway judge Mr. Hopkins remarks for then I would be hypocritical. However, I must remind Mr. Hopkins of a few things that he seems to have forgotten.

Judgment lends emotional and offensive voice to Hopkins' opinion

I am writing you to respond to the article in last week’s paper written by Thad Hopkins. I am one of many students who have been outraged by this deliberate attack on our chapel. I am glad that Thad has his own opinions and he has every right to express his views, but I believe he went about it all wrong. So, in return I am exer-cising my right to express my views. If he meant to make people mad and get them thinking, the he succeeded, but not in the way I believe he was aiming for.
