Swimmers grab first league victory, defeat St. Mary's

Staff Writer

Last Saturday Alma College women’s swimming and diving placed their first mark in the win column after a close meet with St. Mary’s College.

This 121-91 victory over last place St. Mary’s brings the lady Scots to a 1-5 record to end the season.

The lady Scots, led by captain Julie Fantone (04), swam one of their best meets ever. Fantone said, “It’s excit-ing to end the season on a positive note. A lot of people had a lot of great swims today. We’re hoping to step it up and get some really good times at conferences.” Fantone placed first in both the 1000 and 200 yard Freestyle events.

Other strong finishers for the Scots were Stephanie Druskinis (05), who was victorious in both the 50 and 100 yard Freestyle, and Brianne Hauser (05), who edged out a St. Mary’s swimmer to take the 200 yard Butterfly.

Jacie Wilkie (06) took first in the 200 yard Breaststroke and Liz Smith (04) out swam the competition to win the 200 yard Backstroke. The 400 yard Freestyle Relay team, comprised of Smith, Hauser, Druskinis, and Emily Dolan (06), also placed first.

Contributing thirteen points to the point total were divers Lynsay Masters (04) and Julie Bolitho (06). Master’s said, “I scored pretty high on most of my dives. If I wouldn’t have missed that one dive, I would have made it to nationals.” This is Lynsay’s first year diving after taking three years off, and she is glad to be back. These points were definitely needed since diver Amy West (06) was out for foot surgery.

Both the women and men will head to East Grand Rapids High School on February 19th to swim in the confer-ence meet hosted by Calvin College.

Greg Baadte, Head Coach of Swim-ming and Diving, is excited about today’s victory going into the confer-ence meet. He said, “We out swam them and we out dove them. Their effort was unbelievable. Rolling into the conference meet with this type of momentum is excellent.”
